Update on Hanganak Elder Program and Clinic

December 15, 2023

Since November 29th, 2004, Hanganak Elder Program and Clinic, a Non-Governmental Organization sponsored by the Armenian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) has implemented a project to provide medical and social support to the elderly living alone in Artsakh. The project was conducted to address the basic health and social needs of the elderly through the delivery of comprehensive social and health care services along with provision of pharmaceuticals and food. Operating in Artsakh for more than 19 years, the organization has provided its services to more than 1,000 lonely elderly people living in Artsakh.

In September 2023, the population of Artsakh was evacuated. The mass exodus of the Armenian population from Artsakh was not voluntary. It happened as a result of a military operation undertaken by the Baku regime, and the population of Artsakh made this choice under the threat and the use of force.

Over the course of a week, more than 100 thousand people left their place of permanent residence – their Homeland, where their ancestors had lived for thousands of years, including the staff of the Hanganak NGO and lonely elderly beneficiaries under the care of the organization.

On October 3, 2023, the team of Hanganak Elder Program and Clinic held its first meeting in Armenia, at which a unanimous decision was made to continue the activities of the organization: to determine the location of 320 evacuated beneficiaries on the territory of the Republic of Armenia, conduct an initial needs assessment and, if possible, cover as many of them as possible in its ongoing and subsequent projects.

On October 25, 2023, the Hanganak Elder Program and Clinic NGO was registered in the Republic of Armenia as the Hanganak Non-Governmental Charity Organization (Registration number of the state certificate 211.171.1348723, TIN 08266735).
Hanganak NGO registered in Artsakh will cease its activities on January 1, 2024, in the 20th year of its activity, giving way to Hanganak Non-Governmental Charity Organization.

Today, most of our beneficiaries of Hanganak Elder Program and Clinic are spread all over Armenia where they have been sent from the reception points in Armenia. Many of them have found temporary accommodation in the homes of their relatives or friends, rented an apartment or ended up in care centers for the elderly and nursing homes operating in Armenia.
